What Is EPG?
EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide. It is the TV guide built into your IPTV app that shows channel names, current and upcoming programmes, broadcast times and programme descriptions. Think of it as the digital equivalent of a printed TV listings magazine — it tells you what is on now, what is coming next and what is scheduled for the rest of the day.
When EPG data fails to load, your channels still work perfectly fine. You can still watch live TV and switch between channels as normal. The only difference is that you lose the programme information — instead of seeing show titles and times, you see blank or empty guide entries. This makes it harder to find what you want to watch, but it does not affect the streams themselves.
EPG data is delivered as a separate file (usually in XMLTV format) that your app downloads from the IPTV provider's server. The app then matches this data to your channel list and displays it in the guide. If anything goes wrong during that download or matching process, the guide appears empty. For a broader look at how IPTV delivers content to your screen, the Wikipedia article on EPG covers the technical background.
Why EPG Stops Loading
Several things can prevent your programme guide from appearing. Understanding the cause helps you pick the right fix.
- EPG data source URL has changed or expired. Providers occasionally update the URL that delivers programme data. If your app still points to the old address, it downloads nothing.
- App cache is full or corrupted. Your IPTV app stores EPG data locally so it loads faster. Over time this cached data can become corrupted, causing the guide to display incorrectly or not at all.
- Provider has not updated the EPG feed. EPG data needs to be refreshed regularly on the server side. If the provider's feed is stale, your app has nothing new to download.
- App settings are incorrect. A wrong EPG URL, an incorrect timezone setting or a disabled EPG feature in your app's configuration can all prevent the guide from loading.
- Poor internet connection during EPG download. EPG files can be large — anywhere from 20 to 50 MB for a full channel list. If your connection drops or slows during the download, the file arrives incomplete and the guide shows gaps or stays empty.
Force an EPG Refresh
The fastest fix for a missing programme guide is to force your app to re-download the EPG data from the server. Most IPTV apps include a dedicated option for this.
Open your app's settings and look for an option labelled "Refresh EPG", "Update EPG" or "Reload Guide Data". The exact wording varies between apps, but it is usually found in the EPG or General settings section. Tap it to start a fresh download.
Give the process a few minutes to complete. The app needs to download the full EPG file from the server and then parse it against your channel list. For providers with thousands of channels, this file can be 20 to 50 MB, so a stable internet connection matters here.
Once the download finishes, open the programme guide and check whether channel listings now appear. If specific channels still show blank entries, those channels may not have EPG data mapped to them on the provider's end — this is normal for some smaller or regional channels.
Tip: After refreshing, wait 2–3 minutes for the EPG to fully load. Large channel lists take longer to populate.
Fix EPG in Popular Apps
Each IPTV app handles EPG data slightly differently. Here are targeted instructions for the most commonly used players.
IPTV Smarters Pro
Open the app and go to Settings > EPG. Set the update interval to every 24 hours so the guide stays current automatically. Then tap Refresh EPG data to trigger an immediate update. If the guide remains empty after refreshing, log out and log back in — this forces the app to re-fetch all data from your provider's server. For the full setup walkthrough, see our IPTV Smarters Pro guide.
TiviMate
Navigate to Settings > EPG and set the update interval to 24 hours. Press the Update button to start a manual refresh. If the guide still shows no data, go back to your playlist settings and re-enter the EPG URL provided by your IPTV service. An incorrect or outdated URL is the most common reason TiviMate's guide stays blank. Our TiviMate player guide walks through the full configuration process.
VLC and Kodi
EPG in VLC and Kodi is handled separately from the channel playlist. You need to provide an XMLTV guide URL in addition to your M3U playlist URL. In Kodi, open PVR IPTV Simple Client > EPG settings and make sure the XMLTV URL field contains the correct address from your provider. In VLC, EPG support is limited — consider switching to a dedicated IPTV app if you rely on the programme guide.
EPG on MAG Boxes
MAG boxes handle EPG differently from app-based players. They pull programme data directly from the portal URL configured in the box's settings, so there is no separate EPG URL to manage.
To check and fix EPG on a MAG box, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings > System Settings > Servers > Portals.
- Verify that your Portal URL is entered correctly. Even a single mistyped character will prevent the box from connecting to the server and loading guide data.
- Save your settings and restart the box by unplugging it for 10 seconds, then plugging it back in.
- After the box restarts, open the portal and check the programme guide. It should begin loading within a minute or two.
If the guide still does not appear after verifying the portal URL and restarting, the issue is likely on the provider's end. Contact support for further assistance. For detailed MAG box setup instructions, visit our IPTV on MAG box guide.
Clear Cache and Data
Corrupted cache is one of the most common reasons an EPG stops loading. Your IPTV app stores guide data locally to speed things up, but this stored data can become damaged over time. Clearing it forces the app to download everything fresh.
Amazon Fire Stick
Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Find your IPTV app in the list and select it. Tap Clear Cache first, then tap Clear Data. Reopen the app and let it reload.
Android Devices
Open Settings > Apps and find your IPTV app. Tap Storage, then tap Clear Cache. If the guide still does not load, return and tap Clear Data as well.
Smart TV
Most Smart TVs do not offer a cache-clearing option for individual apps. The simplest approach is to uninstall the IPTV app completely, then reinstall it from the TV's app store. This wipes all cached and stored data.
Warning: Clearing data will remove your login details. Have your credentials ready before doing this.
After clearing data, you will need to re-enter your IPTV login credentials and any custom settings. The EPG should begin downloading automatically once you log back in.
Add EPG URL Manually
Some IPTV apps allow you to add an external EPG source manually. This is useful when the built-in EPG feed from your provider is not working correctly, or when you want to use a more reliable third-party source.
Your IPTV provider should supply an EPG URL as part of your subscription details. This URL usually ends in .xml or .xml.gz and points to an XMLTV file hosted on the provider's server. If you do not have this URL, contact your provider and ask for it specifically.
To add a manual EPG source in TiviMate, go to Settings > EPG > Add source and paste the URL. The app will download and parse the file, then match programme data to your channel list. Other apps follow a similar process — look for an EPG or Guide section in settings where you can enter a custom URL.
External EPG sources can sometimes be more reliable than the built-in one, especially if your provider's default feed is slow to update. Once you add a manual source, set the update interval to 24 hours so the guide refreshes daily without manual intervention.
When to Contact Support
If your EPG still has not loaded after working through every fix above, the problem may be on the provider's end. The EPG feed itself might need updating, or there could be a server-side issue preventing the guide data from being delivered to your app.
Get in touch with support when:
- You have tried refreshing, clearing cache and re-entering the EPG URL — and the guide is still empty.
- The EPG loads for some channels but not others — this often points to incomplete data mapping on the server.
- The problem appeared suddenly — the guide was working fine and stopped without any changes on your end.
- Multiple devices are affected — if the EPG is missing on every device you use, the issue is almost certainly server-side.
When you reach out, let us know which app you use, which device you are on, and what steps you have already tried. This helps us diagnose the problem faster.
